A study into the development of a program to enhance teacher wellbeing found that the best source of effective strategies was the teachers themselves. Given the opportunity to look into their own wellbeing, staff members were able to identify what worked best for them and that resulted in teachers feeling less stressed and able to improve their overall mood and relationships with students. Teacher Shortage Stunting Teaching

Melbourne science teacher Amanda Peters, who taught at a secondary school in the city’s east before taking a recent career break to undertake her PhD, said she taught classes out-of-field for most of her 20-year career. During that time, she was asked to teach everything from driver education to sport, maths, physics, and geography as out-of-field subjects.
   While teaching out-of-field gives educators an opportunity to stretch their skills, she said most find the experience stressful. Read more

Educators and parents must improve both the explicit and implicit messaging girls receive about science and maths. If we normalise language around these subjects being interesting, exciting and attainable we will begin to close the gender gap in the take up of STEM subjects. If we de-gender professions in the STEM subjects we will move closer to making STEM subjects feel more inclusive to women.

Filling the Holes: Life as a Teaching Principal

I’m a filler of holes. Some of these holes are expected and predictable. I teach anywhere from six to 15 classes each week – some in person, others through our DE program. As Principal, I take the lead on writing high end documentation like Block Grant Authority applications for capital funding to expand our building or other government documentation as needed. Other holes to fill are less predictable.
